THE REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER (ASSIGNMENT 1)

I am becoming a mathematics teacher. For the preparation or my future career, the beginning teachers like me should know about theories of mathematics learning and teaching. This is because to be an effective teacher, it is not enough to be able to recognize what happen in the classrooms. However, it is important to understand “why”, “how’s”, and “what if’s” as well.

From the discussion in class, now I know that the beginning teachers need to be a reflective practitioner. The term “Reflective Practitioner” is articulated by Donald Schon. He defines reflection as “knowing-in-action” and he explained that "when the practitioner reflects-in-action in a case he perceives as unique, paying attention to phenomena and surfacing his intuitive understanding of them, his experimenting is a once exploratory, move testing, and hypothesis testing. The three functions are fulfilled by the very same actions".

The reflective practice means that we are taking the opportunity to think about the work we are doing while we are do it or after that. So, the beginning teachers should have some kinds of qualities that we get in a reflective practitioner. The qualities that we expect in a reflective practitioner are by doing a set of skills, understanding, awareness, knowledgeable and able to think fast which will enable us to improve the quality of what we offer students.

The beginning teachers should bear these qualities because to produce teachers that understand the technique and method on how to manage the students in the classrooms. Besides that, these qualities will help teachers to make the students learn better. In the same way, reflective practice will enable professional development such as the knowledge economy and to maintain quality such as reflect on what went wrong or well and why. In the same time, we also plan to improve skills if necessary, or to use those skills in future events.

So, I have expected this course to help me to develop this quality by helping the beginning teachers to be more confident on what we are doing. Besides that, we will also understand more on how children or students learn so that we can prepare the best technique to manage them in the classrooms.

As the conclusion, as I studied this course, I hope I will have all the qualities in a reflective practitioner so that I will become a good teacher and I will always remember that the best practitioners are constantly learning, evaluating and refining their practice, even after years of experience.
